Magnolia Betty 80/100cm 7.5 Litre: A very popular vigorous growing medium sized variety of Magnolia. It produces deep red almost purple tulip shaped flowers with creamy white centres flowers have a delicate scent. Native to Japan Magnolia Betty has become established as one of the most popular small trees in the UK, reaching heights of upto 4 metres, however this would only be acheived in exceptional circumstances, with soil, light, position and care having to be perfect. A more realistic height would be approximately 2.5 metres with a similar spread.  What makes Magnolia Betty standout from the crowd is her ability to adapt to various soil types, unlike other varieties it is tolerant of lime soil, so is suitable for almost any garden, due to its relatively small height and spread it is also happy planted in a large pot thus making it a great choice for courtyard planting and small gardens with no borders.

Planting position: Magnolia Tree Betty prefer a good sunny spot but will cope well with light partial shade. Preferably plant somewhere away from exposed windy sites and somewhere that avoids frost as much as possible, this is more important in early spring than during the winter as late harsh late frosts may damage furry buds and the flowers.

Soil: Sand Clay and Loam.

Suitable for container planting: Yes can adapt to being grown in a pot.

Eventual height and spread: In absolute ideal conditions upto 4 metres. More realistically you should expect to acheive around 2.5 metres with a similar spread.

Flowering Period: Produces stunning large tulip shaped white flowers in April through to May, leaves arrive towards the end of the flowering period

A relatively easy plant to maintain, that has no real specfic requirements. When preparing your hole add some well rotted manure or a loam based compost this will help the plant adapt to its new surroundings quicker, also ensure your plant is planted at the same depth as it is in the pot. Like all new plants ensure a good water supply until established.
