Phormiums are not tender plants that only grow in very mild southern areas they can grow pretty much anywhere in the UK and make especially good plants for coastal and windswept areas . They can tolerate minus 5°C without issue which during most winters especially in milder areas is just about as bad as it gets. They can cope with -10°C if basic measures are taken. All that is necessary is a deep and dry mulch of peat, leaf mould, leaves or bark right around the base of the plant and between individual shoots if you have a large clump with many side shoots. The leaves of larger clumps can offer protection to a lesser degree, even if they are split and scarred by the wind, any damaged leaves can be easily removed once the worst of the weather has passed.
