Bamboo Fargesia Scabrida 10 litre: Commonly known as the Asian Wonder Bamboo. Scabrida is a relatively new introduction to the 'Fargesia' family. It is native to the Sichuan province of China, it is one of the most colourful Fargesia available. Culms are covered with rusty orange sheaths that open to reveal blue almost purple culms, that slowly fade to a deep green. Foliage is mid green slim and long. It is a non invasive vigorous upright grower, ideal for both ground and container planting.
In its homeland it is known as one of the Giant pandas favourite Bamboo , however thats not something us the the Uk have to be too concerned with!
What to expect: Your plant will arrive planted in a 10 Litre/29cm pot. It will have an actual height excluding the pot of approximately 100cm and will look exactly like the pictures, or bigger. The current pictures were taken January 2018, we have included some of the new culms/shoots that are breaking soil and also some below ground level, these will not only bush these plants out but make them considerably taller.
Planting position: Best suited to a sunny spot but will cope well in a partially shade area
Soil:Suited to both loan and clay, add some manure or fertiliser to give new plants a boost
Suitable for Container planting: Great choice for containers but make sure they have plenty of water.
Eventual height and spread: Overall height 3- 4 metres with a spread of 1-1.5 metres.
Pruning: Not really necessary but any winter damage can be removed immediately, if you are pruning to restrict height this is best done during the dormant months
Growth speed: Quick almost Vigorous
Growth Habit: Upright with slight draping habit
Flowering period: Not Applicable
Evergreen: Yes, but like most Bamboo it will shed some foliage in late Autumn/ Early winter this is not a cause for concern it will soon be replaced once the temperatures start to rise Winter Hardy: -20
For best results when planting break the soil and add some well rotted manure or organic fertiliser, this not only invigorates the soil but also helps the area retain moisture. Feed with a Nitrogen based food during spring and a balanced fertiliser during the grwoing season April through to late August. Always ensure an adequate water supply especially for young ot pot planted plants
