Bamboo Fargesia Scabrida – Commonly known as the Asian Wonder BambooBamboo Fargesia Asian Wonder, also known as Asian Wonder bamboo or Fargesia Dracocephala 'Asian Wonder,' is a popular bamboo species that is highly valued for its unique characteristics.

Bamboo Fargesia Asian Wonder is a clumping bamboo variety, which means it grows in tight, non-invasive clusters instead of spreading rapidly like running bamboo. This makes it an ideal choice for those who want to enjoy the beauty of bamboo without worrying about it taking over their garden.

The plant in ideal circumstances can reach a mature height of upto 3m but this would only be in ideal circumstances, somewhere around 2m is probably more realistic. Its compact and dense growth habit makes it suitable for hedges, privacy screens, or as an eye-catching focal point in your landscape.

One of the standout features of Bamboo Fargesia Asian Wonder is its unique foliage. The leaves are slender, narrow, and delicately textured, giving the plant a graceful and elegant appearance. They emerge as a vibrant green colour and retain their colour throughout the year, even in colder climates.

In terms of hardiness, it can withstand extreme cold to approximately-15. Bamboo Fargesia Asian Wonder is known for its ability to tolerate various growing conditions. It can thrive in both partial shade and full sun, making it versatile for different areas of your garden.
Bamboo Fargesia Asian Wonder is relatively low-maintenance compared to other bamboo species. It doesn't require extensive pruning or thinning, but the removal of any dead or damaged canes can help maintain its overall appearance. Adequate watering, especially during dry periods, is essential for its optimal health and growth.

Due to its moderate size and non-invasive nature, Asian Wonder is often used in smaller gardens, urban landscapes, and as a container plant. It can also serve as a beautiful backdrop for other plants or as a natural privacy screen.

Planting position: Best suited to a sunny spot but will cope well in a partially shade area

Soil: Like most plants in the garden will do best in free draining rich moist soil, however that being said it is also suitable for both loam and clay, (but not to heavy) add some manure or fertiliser to give new plants a boost.

Suitable for Container planting: Great choice for containers but make sure they have plenty of water.

Eventual height and spread: Overall height 3- 4 metres with a spread of 1-1.5 metres.

Pruning: Not really necessary but any winter damage can be removed immediately, if you are pruning to restrict height this is best done during the dormant months Growth speed: Quick almost Vigorous Growth Habit: Upright with slight draping habit.

Flowering period: Not Applicable

Evergreen: Yes, but like most Bamboo it will shed some foliage in late autumn/ early winter this is not a cause for concern it will soon be replaced once the temperatures start to rise

Winter Hardy: -20.

For best results when planting break the soil and add some well-rotted manure or organic fertiliser, this not only invigorates the soil but also helps the area retain moisture. Feed with a Nitrogen based food during spring and a balanced fertiliser during the growing season April through to late August. Always ensure an adequate water supply especially for young pot planted plants.

Bamboo Fargesia Scabrida 5 litre: This beautiful Bamboo was identified in the early 1970s and only came into commercial grower’s hands in 1997, so a relatively new cultivar. It was discovered in the mountainous region of ‘Pingwu’ China at an altitude of over 8500ft, making it extremely winter hardy and one of the "evergreenest" clumping Bamboo available.

. Are they evergreen Bamboo are an evergreen, perennial and a member of the grass family. Fast growing, they take up very little lateral space and yet they can reach fabulous heights extremely quickly, making bamboo a very cost effective choice when you need screening fast! They will naturally shed some leaf during the winter months. .How much water do they need Like any other plant, bamboo needs three basic things in order to survive. Soil, sun and water. And as a gardener, one of your greatest responsibilities is to provide your bamboo with water. They are an incredibly thirsty plant and will require watering on a daily basis especially during hot periods. .Will it need a root barrier Fargesia are a non invasive clumping bamboo and will not require a root barrier. Phyllostachys, Aureosulcata and Pseudosasa are all ‘runners’ which can be either planted in a larger pot or with a root barrier in the ground. .How quickly will it grow This really is dependent on watering sunshine and care. You would hope to achieve at least another third in growth during the growing season. .How far apart should I plant them Space mature plants 1 metre apart to form a dense screen. Fast Growing varieties can be planted a little further apart if you don't mind waiting longer for them to fill in the gaps.
