Ilex Crenata Convexa, with small convex leaves and dark green foliage looks are similar to Buxus but without the problem of attracting the dreaded Box tree caterpillar.

Ilex has long been touted as a possible alternative Crenata Convexa is a similar looking, plant leaves are slightly darker and smaller and as the name suggests they are of a convex nature. Generally speaking Ilex Crenata are an easily cared for plant if you follow the rules and plant them in Acid soil or Ericaceous compost, food should be something similar to what you would use for Rhododendron or other acid loving plants. As with all Ilex if your soil is not acidic you need to make it acidic this can be done in several ways you can add acidic soil or ericaceous compost to the planting area or treat the area with Sulphate Of Iron 2 or 3 times a year, this will keep acid levels high and Ilex healthy.
Whilst fully hardy and robust these plants do not tolerate drought therefore during the drier months when the plants are actively growing the planting area must be kept moist, a dry planting area will almost certainly lead to leaf drop and in severe cases the plant or plants will not recover.
