Aucuba Japonica Variegata is a handsome evergreen and therefoe should be classes necessity in a garden once light levels fall and temperatures plummet. Aucubas, or Japanese laurels, have winter-warming foliage in a variety of shades ranging from rich green to freckled gold. The female forms can produce large red berries if cross-pollinated by the reddish-purple flowers of a male. These large fruits colour up in spring. The variegated forms casts a speckled pattern of gold, Aucubas for want of a better phrase are bombproof, able to tolerate drought and a variety of situations from full sun to deep shade.
