Cornus Kousa Weisse Fontaine  XL 175/200cm 70 Litre: Cornus Kousa 'Weisse Fontaine' is a stunning cultivar of the Kousa dogwood tree. It is known for its elegant, weeping habit and abundant white flowers, making it a popular choice among gardeners and landscapers.

Cornus Kousa 'Weisse Fontaine' is a deciduous tree that typically reaches a height of approximately 4.5 to 6 metres and spreads about 3 to 4 metres wide. Its distinctive weeping branches create a graceful, cascading form that adds a sense of elegance and beauty to any landscape.

One of the standout features of Weisse Fontaine is its abundant and showy white flowers. In late spring to early summer, the tree is covered with a profusion of large, creamy white blooms that resemble star-shaped flowers. These flowers create a breathtaking display and attract pollinators like bees and butterflies to the garden.

After the flowers fade, Weisse Fontaine produces small, strawberry-like fruits that transition from green to pink to red as they mature. These fruits are not only ornamental but also attract birds, adding another layer of interest to the tree.

During the autumn season, the foliage turns a vibrant shade of reddish-purple, providing a stunning display of autumn colours. The combination of the colourful foliage, lingering fruits, and weeping branches creates a picturesque scene in the garden.

In terms of cultivation, 'Weisse Fontaine' is relatively low-maintenance and adaptable. It thrives in well-drained soils that are rich in organic matter. While it prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, it can tolerate a range of soil conditions. This tree is drought-tolerant once established, but regular watering is necessary during dry spells. It is also relatively resistant to diseases and pests, making it a reliable choice for gardeners.

Best planted in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. It can be used as a specimen tree, planted in groups, or incorporated into a mixed shrub border. Its weeping habit makes it an excellent choice for adding height and visual interest to garden beds or along pathways.

Cornus kousa 'Weisse Fontaine' prefers well-drained soils that are rich in organic matter. It thrives in a range of soil types, but there are a few preferred soil conditions for cultivating this cultivar.

Firstly, 'Weisse Fontaine' prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil pH. Ideally, the pH should be in the range of 5.5 to 7.0. You can test the soil pH using a soil testing kit available at garden centres or of course Amazon. If the soil pH is outside the preferred range, you can make adjustments by adding soil amendments such as sulphur to lower the pH or lime to raise it.

In addition to the pH, the soil should have good drainage. Poorly drained or waterlogged soils can lead to root rot and other issues. To improve drainage, you can amend heavy clay soils with organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure. This will help loosen the soil and enhance its drainage capacity.

It is also beneficial to ensure that the soil is fertile and rich in organic matter. Adding compost or well-rotted manure to the planting hole or as a top dressing can help improve soil fertility and provide essential nutrients for the tree's growth.

Although 'Weisse Fontaine' can tolerate a range of soil conditions, it is important to avoid extremely sandy or compacted soils. Sandy soils drain too quickly and may not retain enough moisture for the tree's needs, while compacted soils can restrict root growth and nutrient uptake.

Lastly, regular watering is necessary, especially during dry spells, to establish and maintain the tree's health. Adequate moisture is crucial during the first year after planting, as the tree develops its root system. Once established, 'Weisse Fontaine' is relatively drought-tolerant, but it still benefits from regular watering during prolonged periods of drought.

By providing well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil with good fertility and moisture retention, you can create optimal growing conditions for Cornus kousa 'Weisse Fontaine'. These soil conditions will support the tree's overall health and vigour, allowing it to thrive and showcase its beautiful weeping habit, abundant flowers, and colourful foliage.
