5 Litre Hydrangea Macrophylla 'Red Angel' part of the award winng Black Diamond range of Hydrangea : A relatively new introduction to the Hydrangea Macrophylla family. This exclusive variety of hydrangea, is part of the Black diamond series which showcases its dark foliage throughout the year it exhibits exceptional flowering against an attractive dark foliage. The lace cap flowers come in various shades ranging from dark red(Red Angel) to dark purple. The foliage ranges from dark green to almost black, in this instance dark green it creates an excellent contrast with the flower colours.
This is a very well branched and rich - flowering plant
What to expect: Your Hydrangea Red Angel will arrive planted in a large 5 Litre pot. It will have a very minimum height of 50cm excluding the pot however if purchased in summer this will be nearer 50-60cm. The picture was taken in mid-June on our own nursery so depending on the time of year purchased it may well look just like it.
Planting Position: Hydrangea are happy in full sun through to partial shade in a position where they can take centre stage.
Soil: Any, but prefers well drained moderately fertile Humus rich.
Suitable for container planting: Yes happy to be in a pot or in the ground, if pot planted ensure an adequate water supply.
Eventual Height and spread: Upto 2 metres tall with a 2 metre spread.
Growth speed: Moderate.
Growth Habit: Upright and bushy Flowers: Produces huge white blooms which can be as big as 30cm in diameter held upright by strong sturdy stems.
Flowering period: July through to September.
Evergreen: No
Winter Hardy: Yes
Pruning: Remove faded flower heads in spring after the frosts have passed, cut back the stems to approximately 2cm above a strong pair of buds and remove any misplaced or diseased branches
In hot weather ensure the plant gets a thorough soaking to prevent the roots drying out. Mulch plants with well rotted manure or compost in early spring.
When should I prune back my Hydrangea:
We suggest waiting until Febrary/March when the frosts have gone. The dead flower heads will protect the plant over the winter months. When the frosts have finished cut it back by approximately a quarter and remove any weak or frost damaged shoots to the healthy wood.
