Cotinus Coggygria 'Royal Purple 10 Litre. Commonly known as "The Smoke Bush". This shrub has beautiful dark burgundy oval shaped leaves, that turn to a deep scarlet as soon at the temperatures take a tumble. From July through to August is is covered with plumes of pink flowers that look like a haze of smoke hence “The Smoke Bush". Because of its colouring it makes an eye-catching shrub in a mixed border, foliage tends to look at its best when heavy pruning has been carried out in late winter/early spring.

What to expect: Your plant will arrive planted in a large 10 litre pot, it will have an actual plant size of approximately 50/60cm.

 

Planting position: For best results plant in full sun, through to light dappled shade.

Soil: Moderately fertile, moist but not wet, well drained.

Suitable for container planting. Yes can be pot planted but does better in a border.

Eventual height and spread: 5 metres x 5 metres ( in exceptionally good circumstances) 

Growth speed: Average Growth habit: Upright and bushy.

Flowering Period: July through August

Pruning: Optional but if you do wish to this is best done late winter or very early spring before the growing season.

Foliage: Dark red almost scarlet

Evergreen: No deciduous

In late winter or early spring before the growing season commences, any damaged or diseased branches should be removed, if you would like the plant to produce large leaves Cotinus Cogg Royal Purple should be cut back hard to within two or three buds of the base, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or organic compost around the base of the plant
