Standard (60 or 90cm stem) Acer Palmatum Crimson Queen: This beautiful weeping Japanese Maple has feathery foliage that emerges burgundy red in the spring and is known for holding its red colour right through the summer, although sometimes fading slightly to reddish green, before turning vibrant crimson red in autumn. Crimson Queen has a beautiful weeping habit.  This Japanese Maple looks just fantastic and is a real head turner the shrub is very striking and ideal for borders or pots on the patio. This particular plant has that little extra as it is a standard plant. It has a clear stem of approximately 60cm. It is an exquisite and highly decorative variety that is distinctive for its magnificent, slender, dark red dissected leaves. The fabulous colorful foliage of this hardy ornamental shrub looks wonderful on the patio or decking. As it grows fairly slowly it is very suitable for small gardens.  

 

Planting Position: Acer are best planted in a sunny spot through to partial shade ideally in an area sheltered from strong afternoon summer sun. Also away from exposed frosty sites, as late spring frosts may damage new foliage. This plant need to be situated somewhere it can be seen and admired.

Soil: Whilst Acer plants or Japanese Maple are not fully fledged Ericaceous or Lime Hating plants they do prefer soil with a high Acid content.

Suitable for container planting: Yes equally as happy in the pot or the ground.

Growth Speed: Relatively slow.

Flowering Period: Not applicable.

Pruning: Not really a requirement. However if you choose to, hard pruning should be done in the dormant months November through to early February. Some light pruning can also be undertaken during the growing season to help create a defined the shape of the head. However we think with these particular plants they should be left to there own devices

Foliage: Begins mid red in early March before turning scarlet during the summer months

Evergreen: No deciduous

Winter Hardy: Yes

Acer plants prefer Acid soil although this is not an absolute necessity it will help the plant reach its full potential. If you have unsuccessfully tried to grow Azalea, Rhododendron, Pieris, Camellias the chances are your soil has a high lime content. Soil can be improved by adding Ericaceous compost to the planting hole this will lower the lime content and raise acid. If pot planted best choice is John Innes Ericaceous Compost this is a specially formulated sterilised loam based, lime free compost with essential foods for plants such as Acer Palmatum. Also in the coldest areas it may be advisable wrap the pots in a winter fleece or bubble wrap during the coldest months, this will help protect the roots. Repotting in fresh compost should be considered every 2 years. Ensure an adequate water supply and feed approximately every 6-8 weeks from early spring through to mid-summer.
