Choose a location with morning sun and in the hottest parts of the country somewhere with a liitle shade from hot afternoon sun. Umbrella pines need organically rich soil that manages moisture well so before planting prepare your hole with some well-rotted manure or a thick layer of compost. Try to keep the soil relatively moist. Organic mulch will help maintain some moisture feed once or twice during the summer months. This plant has no special requirements during the winter months
