Leucothoe Fontanesiana Whitewater 5 Litre: Known as Switch Ivy this is a graceful new evergreen shrub with arching stems. Covered in striking white variegated leaves that cover reddish young shoots, this strong growing shrub is perfect for a sunny place or in the shade. In winter the leaves become dark red adding a further dimension to the year round display. Extremely winter hardy, during the spring it is also adorned with small white urn shaped flowers. Flowering is followed by the emergence of attractive new growth in shades of wine, pink, copper and green. As the new leaf growth matures it turns to a dark green with the ivory white margin.

Growth Speed: Medium.

Flowering Period: Not a plant known for its flowers but it does produce small pretty urn shaped white flowers in spring.

Pruning: Not necessary.

Evergreen: Yes, provides year round interest with new foliage giving a lovely contrast to the old, and becoming darker during the winter months.

Winter hardy: Yes will happily withstand temperatures of -15.

Although an extremely adaptable variety of Leucothoe, it does in ideal circumstances prefer an Acid soil. If you have tried growing Pieris, Camellia, Azalea, Rhododendron, and have not been successful the chances are your soil has a high lime content, this can be improved by loosening the soil at the bottom of the planting hole, and adding some ericaceous compost this will promote root growth. A general fertiliser with a seaweed content has proved highly successful in trials and is better applied via a liquid feed rather than granules. There is no special requirements for winter.
