Winter Hardy Palm - Trachycarpus Fortunei Advertised Sizes Are The Trunk Height Only And Exclude The Foliage And The Pot: Also known as Chusan Palm or Chinese Windmill Palm. Palm trees are now classed as an almost essential for modern looking UK gardens, in years gone by keen gardeners used to have to keep there fingers crossed hoping that the winter would be kind to them, well with these Trachycarpus your worries are over! These palm trees will sit out all winter long and will cope with -15 without blinking, they will look just as good during the cold wet months when the rest of the garden is struggling as they do during the summer. They are happy planted almost anywhere in the garden in moist well drained soil in full sun through to partial shade, exposed windy sites should be avoided, winds do not actually damage the plant but it can shred the leaves making it look very untidy, when picking a planting spot keep in mind if these trees are happy they will grow 30cm plus a year and achieve a considerable size with a mature height of upto 12 metres with a 2.5 metre spread. They can be pot planted whilst it remains a manageable size but we would recommend ground planting as the plant matures.
