Acer Platanoides Royal Red AKA Norway Maple 250/275cm 30 Litre pot: Acer Platanoides, commonly known as the Royal Red Norway Maple, is a deciduous tree that belongs to the Aceraceae family. This majestic tree is native to Europe but has been widely cultivated and naturalised in various parts of the world. The Royal Red is a cultivar of the Norway Maple, known for its striking red foliage and sturdy, symmetrical growth habit.

The Royal Red Norway Maple is a medium to large-sized tree, typically reaching a height of 10 metres plus to 50 feet with a spread of 6 to 8m at maturity. Its crown is dense and rounded crown and a strong trunk and branches that are well-branched, giving it a robust and sturdy appearance.

One of the most distinctive features of the Royal Red Norway Maple is its foliage. The leaves are large, measuring 10 to 18cm across, and have five lobes. In the spring and summer, the leaves emerge as a deep maroon to purple-red colour, creating a dramatic contrast against the green landscape. As the seasons change, the foliage transitions to a vibrant red in the autumn.

In addition to its ornamental value, the Royal Red Norway Maple is also valued for its adaptability and hardiness. It can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, including clay and acidic soil, and is relatively resistant to disease and pests. This makes it a low-maintenance tree that can thrive in various environments.

When planting the Royal Red Norway Maple, it is important to provide it with a well-drained location and ample space to grow. It prefers full sun to partial shade and benefits from regular watering, especially during hot and dry periods. Regular pruning can help maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged branches.

A relatively low maintenance tree, Norway Maples require very little help in becoming established. Try adding a dressing of multi purpose fertiliser around the plant in late spring to boost growth. Pruning is not required apart from removing any branches that have been damaged during winter, this is best done in early spring before the growing season commences.
