Photinia Red Robin is a fabulous, all your round addition to your garden or outside space. With the young foliage appearing a vibrant red in Spring and an abundance of white flowers in April/May it is a beautiful evergreen tree. The glossy green leaves have spectacular red tips which make it a fantastic feature for your garden.
The photinia is perfect for the UK as it can tolerate temperatures down to -12c and, if left unpruned it will produce masses of white flowers, happy in most soil types except heavy clay and more suited to drier conditions rather than waterlogged ground.
When planting the Red Robin in is better to pick a full sun or partial shade area as it is not suited to full shade. Although we generally advise planting in Spring or Autumn the Red Robin can be planted at any time of the year as long as the conditions are not frozen and ypu can ensure a good water supply during dry periods.

Photinia are an easily maintained quick growing plant. They grow best in fertile, moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade in a sheltered position. The young shoots can become scorched by cold or drying winds and late frosts if grown in an exposed position. Photinia is tolerant of most soils, even clay as long as it has been improved by incorporating well-rotted compost or manure. Most Photinia require minimal pruning, however these plants have been trained into topiary standards, so to keep the heads in check they will benefit from the occasional trim. To keep the shape of the head under control we recommend trimming a little and often during the growing season and summer, in colder UK areas try to avoid trimming after mid-August, since any new growth would be vulnerable to autumn frosts. Hard pruning, if required should be done in spring when the worse of the weather has passed.

Caring for Photinia trees
Caring for Photinia varieties is relatively easy. They prefer full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. They should be watered regularly, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Twice a year they require fertilising and they also require pruning. Pruning is also necessary to promote bushier growth and to remove any dead or diseased branches. Photinia trees are disease-resistant, but they may be susceptible to pests such as spider mites and scale insects. Regularly inspecting the tree and treating any infestations promptly can help keep pests at bay.
Staking Trees
Staking may be advisable if planting in an exposed position where windrock may be an issue. Once you have dug your hole and the tree is ready to plant, place a stake at a 45-degree angle leaning back towards the support structure. Once planted, compact soil mixture around the base for extra support and water well.
